Jazz, Afro, Oriental

For Your next album you work with some great musicians. What is the idea behind the album ?

The idea behind this album is to transmit a multicultural message that was built from my various influences and foundations: Europe, North Africa, West Africa, Middle East, America.

Who is your favourite pianist ?

My Favorite Pianist is Thelonious Monk. Thelonious Monk brings another dimension to bebop (of which he is one of the founding fathers) and to music in general, through his playing, his compositions, and his interpretation of famous standards of the time, as well as other composers such as Duke Ellington that he particularly affectionates.

Through his unexpected syncopes and dissonance, out of the beaten tracks, he can often make you think of Stravinsky and other composers of that time, the ones that outpassed the musical rules, even through some shocking transitions.

In my sense, the music of Thelonious Monk is very close to the one of ancient Africa.

A lot of elements of his sense of tempo are very personalized. The art of the stride piano of which he’s coming from is under currently present, but not only. All his albums are true masterpieces. I also like his minimalism. His silences have real reason for existing, and are inhabited, his music remains timeless.

What is your favorite album of the past year ?

Seven Seas by Avishai Cohen. There are a lot of elements in his music that I find fascinating; because he’s a real good jazzman an excellent level but also a composer and an innovator who found out how to sculpt his music with different shapes and norms. The different influences he accumulated since his childhood until today are fully alive in his music : pop, classical, eastern, balkanese, ladino…

What do you enjoy most ? Writing music or performing your music live ?

I like both, but i enjoy mostly playing in music. which means that I re-compose it spontaneously. I recreate it with the feeling of the moment, interacting withe musicians I share it with. When you’re inside the creative process, it’s heaven sent. It demands a lot of work, though, but leads to a certain freedom. It’s really worth it.

What is the best venue you have ever performed ?

The international city of Arts, Paris. The Auditorium. What I really liked in this venue, it’s the acoustic sound and the wonderful Bosendorfer Imperial that was there… A dream piano. It was a concert with an oud player.

Jazz music as a genre has been accused as music for snobs. Is jazz music elitist ?

Jazz is very wide today, There is something for everybody. You could say that there is also an elitist kind of jazz, but for me, it’s a pleasure before everything, a message, feelings… Are the young musicians that are fresh out of jazz music schools, more representative of jazz than self-taught musicians? Musicians that come from out of nowhere and cultivate their art through work and discipline can go much farther than that… All the long way that this music has travelled, and also the hard time make it a part of the cultural heritage of mankind

If you could change anything about the music industry, what would it be ?

Consider that all feelings, colors and tastes that we have must live inside the music we play.

Which book should we read while listening to your album ?

No, you can’t read a book while listening to the music, you can’t do two things at once. You can read while listening to light music

One last thing we should know about you ?

I would like to gather all the people of earth inside a common project.

An interview with Jo Kaiat

Vingt ans après « Departures », qui marquait ses débuts discographiques sous le signe, déjà, des voyages transcontinentaux, ce pianiste citoyen du monde revient avec un album pas moins marqué par ses amours musicales sans frontières. En mode trio à personnel variable — ses interlocuteurs changent selon les titres — Jo Kaiat, né à Nice en 1960, livre un carnet de voyage tout en finesse, élégance et retenue. Sous ses doigts résonnent naturellement les échos et les richesses, comme il le dit fort justement, « des musiques hébraïques du Moyen-Orient, de l’Afrique de l’Ouest et arabo-andalouses ». Signe qui ne trompe pas et dit la profondeur de chant de cet authentique album où tout est remarquablement pensé — enchaînement des morceaux, durée totale… —, certains thèmes ne vous quittent plus dès la première écoute. On songe notamment à Avishai (en clin d’oeil à l’un de ses sidemen et « ami de longue date », devinez lequel…) et Flamencato. Quant à l’interplay, cette interaction organique qu’on aime tant dans le jazz, elle est à l’honneur dans Souvenirs, soulignée qui plus est par une prise de son très soignée et un juste équilibre entre les musiciens. « Come To My World » : s’il est un titre qui ne ment pas, c’est bien celui de cet enregistrement très attachant.

Né le 20 avril 1970 à Kibbutz Kabri, en Israël, Avishai Cohen est un contrebassiste, chanteur et compositeur israélien. Après avoir commencé le piano à l’âge de 9 ans, c’est la musique et l’intensité du bassiste Jaco Pastorius qui changea la direction musicale d’Avishai Cohen, ce dernier décidant finalement d’étudier la contrebasse avec Michael Klinghoffer pendant deux ans. Il part ensuite à New York, où il se met en contact avec de nombreux musiciens de jazz. Il s’inscrit au Mannes College The New School for Music et s’intègre à plusieurs groupes de musique . Il est finalement repéré par le pianiste Danilo Pérez et, peu après, par le pianiste Chick Corea, qui lui offre un contrat d’enregistrement. Avishai Cohen forme avec Corea le sextet Origin en 1996, y restant pendant 7 ans avant de le quitter en 2003 afin de créer son propre label, Razdaz Records, ainsi que son propre groupe, le Avishai Cohen Trio (composé de Cohen, Mark Guiliana à la batterie et Shai Maestro au piano). Cohen a travaillé avec de nombreux musiciens de genres différents, tels que Bobby McFerrin, Herbie Hancock, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Alicia Keys et même avec les orchestres Philarmoniques de Londres et d’Israël. Il a aussi produit plusieurs albums.

Je l’ai connu à Jérusalem, c’était un adolescent, avec un jeu de batterie déjà très prometteur… Trop fier de lui !!! Très calme, mais quand il est derrière tout ses fûts, c’est le tonnerre !!!!

Né en 1971 à Jérusalem, Noam David est batteur et compositeur et fait partie du Trio international d’Avishai Cohen. Reconnu par son style de jeu créatif et ses rythmes polyrythmiques distinctifs, riches et complexes. Son style et ses compositions ont grandement contribué à la scène musicale en Israël, influençant de nombreux batteurs et musiciens à travers le pays à développer un style de jeu personnel et original. Depuis son plus jeune âge, Noam David a collaboré et accompagné des musiciens de jazz de premier plan dans le monde, dont le bassiste Avishai Cohen, Eli Dejibri, Daniel Zamir, Omri Mor et bien d’autres.

Né dans le Kibboutz « Nezer Sereni » d’un père polonais et d’une mère yéménite, a commencé ses études musicales à l’âge de dix ans avec une batterie. Durant son séjour à l’armée, il découvre d’autres instruments de percussion pour lesquels il va rapidement se passionner, jusqu’à devenir un spécialiste des percussions dites « ethniques », son double héritage européen et oriental lui donnant une approche particulière et originale de ces instruments. Sa maîtrise lui donne rapidement accès aux scènes nationales et internationales, et il se produira avec avec nombre de musiciens de grande renommée tels que Avishai Cohen, Larry Holdings, et bien d’autres…
